Libraries are fundamental in a democratic society. They are institutions citizens can tap in their quest to make informed decisions and to reach their full potential. Around the world, libraries provide essential knowledge, foster critical thinking and encourage self-education and lifelong learning. In communities with limited resources, they play an added role by providing a sustainable framework for the growth of important principles of leadership development and self-government.

Every Riecken library represents an example of democracy in action: The libraries are free, open to all residents, are managed by representative local committees and provide materials offering a wide range of viewpoints and ideas. Library services are available to anyone seeking them.
