The Riecken Foundation tracks its libraries and their effect on communities. A 2007 impact study in Honduras found:

  • More than 6,000 people use a Riecken library every week; 38 percent of those users visit the library daily.
  • The books and technology in Riecken libraries reach populations in serious need.
  • Youths involved in library programs read literature more often than their counterparts.
  • The libraries introduce new forms of technology to remote villages.
  • Youngsters in Riecken communities spend more time reading and less time watching television after they become library users.
  • Libraries and their governing committees collaborate with schools, health clinics and local groups, enabling them to act in new ways.
  • Reading is the No. 1 adult activity at the libraries, but 40 percent of adults use the libraries as meeting spaces for other organizations.
  • Riecken libraries change the content of what is taught in many secondary school classrooms.
  • Riecken libraries are among the most trusted institutions in a community.
