In today’s knowledge-based world, the Riecken Foundation provides poor communities with a priceless commodity: information. The Foundation lays the framework for community-run lending libraries with open stacks of books and free Internet access. The success of the library network hinges on the active involvement of local committees and volunteers.

Leadership training and community service are key components of the Riecken library model. Signature programs, including reading promotion, youth leadership workshops and Internet research instruction, are supplemented by services customized to meet local needs. For some communities, that means prenatal classes and teen debate clubs. For others, it is carpentry workshops or parenting classes.

The Riecken Foundation’s vision is to use knowledge to open the door to individual opportunity, community development and the positive transformation of developing nations.
