To change the world, you must be able to envision the future. Riecken libraries promote
child literacy, a love of reading and the understanding of new technologies. But they do much more: They open the doors
to innovation and imagination. That, in turn, has sparked new and unexpected opportunities in Riecken communities.
In the Honduran village of Santa Maria de la Paz, a local agronomist’s library research helped the community launch
a fish farm cooperative benefiting 30 families. In San Juan La Laguna, Guatemala, the library director organized a joke
contest – the first-ever in the traditional Tzutujil language. Other initiatives ignited through the library
system include the publication of a local newspaper, the kick-off of a recycling center and the debut of a weekly
farmers’ market.
